Zoozoom Fashionwars!!

Ok kids, it's ON!
Fashion wars second event was a raging success. Fashionistas, photogs, stylists, designers, models, musicians, DJ's, editors, hair and make-up artists, illustrators, set designers from across the great land of New York city all converged at Ultra last thursday night for the ZOOZOOM fashion wars live event.
For years Zoozoom has been covering New York fashion week, and pitting designer against designer with their fashionwars game. A fun online opinion-fest where you get to choose who hit the trends the best....look by look.
Well, they decided to let us all get in on the fun with our own looks. Honestly, it's all in good fun. A chance for the behind  the scenes people to express themselves with their own sense of personal expression. And the best part is that the party lasts for weeks, as you can vote online for your fave outfits at www.fashionwars.com.
The winner gets a spread in ZOOZOOM. The last winner was architect and designer Raya Ani, who I thought was fabulous.
The next event is scheduled for February 17th, so mark your calendars!!

Tokyo Fashion week visits NYC for a night

Last night after enjoying cocktails with my favorite editors and PR gurus, we all sat down to enjoy a 'best of' compilation fashion show of the Spring 2009 collections from some of the hottest designers coming out of Tokyo. It was a lot to digest as 10 designers each showed between 4 and 5 looks. On the whole, I found the event very refreshing. Having spent the last few years attending New York fashion weeks, I have come to know what to expect in terms of trends and shapes. It is easy to foresee the evolution of fashion when you watch the changes season by season. However, the Japanese have entirely their own palate, which I admit that I am not as familiar with as I would like to be.  I find their ideas exciting and vibrant, and hope that I have the opportunity in the future to pull more from their world.
Somarta included a fantastic sheer black skirt with a black cage underneath, that while being reminiscent of McQueen, still had an edge all its own (sort of lolita goth). Especially when it was followed up by a similarly shaped cagey dress, only the entire thing was crocheted.
Hidenobu Yasui played on the oversized slouchy menswear for women, but pushed everything as far as he could.  The fabrics were silky and rich, which gave the looks their femininity, despite the fact that he used as much volume as he could get away with. I also enjoyed the fact that the women unabashedly walked down the runway with mens oxford shoes on (about 5 sizes too big).
G.V.G.V managed to mix trends by overlaying a tan and black trapeze chiffon dress over a fitted dress with a wide black patent corset belt, which simultaneously showed off her figure whilst volume billowed around her.
Mint Designs borrowed it's inspiration from the 80's with it's multi color techno prints and shiny chiffons billowing voluminously away from heads adorned with wooden dinosaur skeletons.
Yes...there was much to digest. And whereas there were a lot of recognizable trends, the Japanese seemed to attack them with fearless fervor from different angles. All in all, it inspires experimentation, exploration, and expression.

Anticipation: McQ for Target

Wow...gotta love the internet 'leaks'. Racked has posted 10 looks from the McQ for Target lookbook that someone had scanned. Personally I am very excited about how this collection is looking, and I imagine the buzz has multiplied exponentially. Nothing wrong with a little leak when it ensures we will all be at Target on March 1st when the collection finally drops.
Yeah, I think I'll be in a bit of a frenzy, as this caters perfectly to my personal style aesthetic. Feminine looks tempered with a punky edge and the influence of menswear. I love short dresses, some studs, oversized mens shirts, and edgy jackets. I am happy to see the McQueen kimono inspired draping, and the graphic geometrics that have been dominating the runways of late. I am still obsessed with grey as a base neutral tone (which my entire wardrobe now revolves around), so the skinny grey jeans are a perfect place to start. The prices will be a smidge more expensive, ranging from $30 to $130. But don't worry, I think it all looks well worth it, and I can't wait until someone leaks the rest of the collection for us all to drool over.

Target time

Now, more than ever, Target is ruling the market...because in a good or bad economy, there is always good reason for affordable designer duds.
December brought us Hayden-Harnett and Thakoon (of which I snagged only a couple items).
In March we all can look forward to the McQueen-Target collab, but in the mean time, you can satisfy yourself with some Target Go-International Private label (the 5th so far). Personally, I'm digging the vibe of this collection. They seem to have jumped on the 80's revival bandwagon without too much irony. The colors pop, there is an edge of new-wave punk, and I love the inclusion of geometric color blocking.
Above are a few of the looks I like, and you can view the full collection here.
Expect these duds to hit stores and online February 1st.

Party time!

I know we'll all still be buzzing after next weeks inauguration, and despite all the peace and love that shall follow, there will be one last war to attend to:So show me who you are: dress up in your fave outfit...and get creative with it, winners tend to be the risk takers who express themselves with their looks.
There will be bands (one from Thurston Moores label), photographers to document and post your fab look, and art work!
See you there, and you better bring it.

I'm Back!

I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday season, and partied like a rock star on New Years Eve. Hiatus time is over for me...and I'm back in the game.
Really, there couldn't be a better time to entice you all to go out shopping. Let's all feel the confidence and hope of our new president and get the economy rolling again. But if you have reason to save your pennies, I'll try to also provide you with inspiration for new ways to work with what you've already got.
Cheers y'all.
