My job is to be resourceful as much as it is to be creative. I am often tasked to create a beautiful look on a tight budget (more and more these days, in fact). I am finding that perhaps this talent is currently as important to my dear readers as my talent for spotting trends and combining elements into the perfect look.
So I would like to share with you this recent tale of frugal fashion success.
As you know, it is fashionweek, which is like window shopping on crack. I think I spend the entire week just salivating over gorgeous designs and styling, and then spend the rest of the time dreaming as to how I can incorporate such beauty into fashion shoots, and ideally, my own closet. Most the time, I keep the shopping entirely in fantasy land, but yesterday I found myself in the west village in between shows. I was passing by a charity shop called Housing Works that was having a 50% off sale. I had a moment to kill, and I deduced that a second hand store in a fashionable, rich, and hip neighborhood would most likely yield some sort of result.
To my absolute delight, I chanced upon a skirt I had actually drooled over at a fashionweek show a year ago (which means it's from Spring 2009 collection). It was providence, because I have been telling myself to incorporate more colors and prints into my grey and black rocker world (it's all about balance and contrast folks). Also, I had already purchased glasses inspired by this runway show, so now I could really complete the look.
As you can see in he picture above, the treasure of which I speak is a raw silk, hand dyed, Sabyasachi skirt. It is an absolute work of art, with impeccable craftmanship. I plan on wearing it with a grey tank, my cropped leather jacket, my black corset boots, and yes, the glasses.
The price you ask? $20.
Fairy tales do come true.
