I have to admit my admiration for all things Gwen Stefani dates back to 1992 when I saw No Doubt play on my college campus as I was walking to class. Back then they were an unknown ska band, and I was just a punk rock girl feeling a little out of place in LA. I loved Gwens mash-up of old hollywood glamour and ska-punk as she defied gravity jumping around stage in her Notre Dame cheerleading outfit.
I have followed her career ever since the day I saw her play and ran to get a No Doubt cassette tape. If we ignore her strange blue hair, fake fur, and bindi phase, she has always had a fashion sense that I can vibe with. I especially adore her homages to Vivienne Westwood post-punk plaids, her 1980's new wave houndstooth, her vintage silhouettes, and her sky high heels.
I just feel so lucky that I have chanced upon her L.A.M.B. line at sample sales and Century 21 on several occasions. And now, as we know, she has launched her diffusion line: Harajuku Lovers, which seems to be every bit as good in design and quality as is L.A.M.B.
Harajuku Lovers is also every bit as available to the frugal shopper, as I have just spotted the above fantastic hidden platform heels at DSW yesterday (NYC Union Square) . I also spotted the Harajuku Lovers Perfume line at Burlington Coat Factory (of all places) last week.
Folks, I obviously love designer clothes, but even more so, I admire personal style. A thing which I do not believe one needs to break the bank to achieve. By all means, go to Bloomingdales to get your pick of the bunch, if you have the funds. But if you are on a budget, use the designers as inspiration when you are shopping in high-street stores or second-hand stores, and grab the actual goods when you can find them at a discounted price (which I am always here to help you with!).
