I've struck gold!

Vintage baby....it's all about vintage...
...This is, of course, nothing new.  Post war fashion has all been about rehashing the past. Many a successful designer has based their career on vintage inspired pieces (read Marc Jacobs, Anna Sui), and currently there has been a strong showing on the runways of silhouettes from the 30's through the 50's. High waists, lace, beading, floral patterns, it's all there. Glamour is back. The beauty of the vintage look is that a girl can enjoy being a lady, whilst asserting her individuality by layering all those wonderful texturized textiles.
Of course, you can have the designer of the day pull the best from the past, give it a sprucing up, and present it for you in a nice (and expensive) package...or you can go rooting around for your own unique finds. Generally that involves many back breaking hours sifting through racks that make your hands feel dirty and usually smell kinda funny. Or you can go to Monster Vintage online, and do the sifting with a few easy clicks. The great part is that the prices are definitely reasonable, and the stock is stylish.
Take a look at some of my fav's.

Roberta di Camerino revival

Miss Sixty has always been retro cool...generally in the realm of the 60's, 70's, and the 80's. So it was no surprise for me to read that Miss Sixty Group has aquired Roberta do Camerino with the intention of bringing the accessories line back to the forefront of fashion. They have already created a design team, so keep an eye out for the retro velvet bags! The one in the picture above was originally designed in 1960. Lets hope the team stays true to her original vision, because I love love love her bags!
Roberta's line started in the late fifties with her iconic handbags, and in the 60's she moved into womens apparel. I hope it all takes off again!

Jennifer Hudson rocks Peter Soronen

Sex and the City, New York Premiere 5/27/08...
I was excited to see that yet another star has jumped on the Peter Soronen bandwagon. How gorgeous does Jennifer Hudson look in his dress? Most of his pieces come with built in corsets which flatter a womans body like nothing else can. He studied the classic patterns for years and really perfected the craft.
It's probably no coincidence that Jennifer chose to wear Peter...perhaps SJP suggested it, as she has rocked his dresses before.
Rock-on Peter...congrats!

Peter Soronen is available at Barneys New York

MAO PARTY 5/27/08

...
Yes, fashion folks like to throw parties, and every now and again, I get an invite that intrigues me. MAO PR is one of my fav showrooms to borrow fabulous pieces for photoshoots, so I was excited to go to Mauricio's Hard Bday party hosted by Roger Padilha  and Phillipe& David Blond. I actually just used an exquisite Blonds white gown for an editorial. Their style is so extravagant that I knew the party would be OTT.
The theme was Hard Candy....and as a self proclaimed sugar addict, I must admit that I fell off the wagon last night...who can resist with temptresses like these?

The party was held at HighBar, which had great sparkling views of midtown as it is located on a massive roof deck complete with comfy lounge beds and BBQ. Just about everyone there was uber creative...and I actually recognized a photographer I had met at a fashion show about 3 years ago. He is now also a dating columnist, and is basically the gay Carrie Bradshaw (altho he covers topics that are pretty universal). Check him out: Dating Bradford.
Of course, everyone was dressed up in their favorite clothes. Some were really in the sparkly spirit, but most were true to their personal style...which for me is always the most fun to see.
I actually also spotted a chick rocking a dress from the new Rogan for Target line.

Bee 23: Bing Bang for Urban Outfitters

Photo from Bing Bang's current collection

Another designer guest appearance alert!

Last year whilst styling an editorial, I was on the hunt for edgy (especially pyramid studded) jewelry. One of the designers that I discovered to be on the forefront of the punk jewelry revival was Bing Bang, and I became an instant fan.
I love their combination of irreverence with uptown quality. Precious gold pyramid stud earrings and layered chain necklaces (well before everyone else jumped on the bandwagon). I also recall that they had dainty earrings of subversive objects.
To reach a new customer, without compromising the high quality that is associated with their brand, Bing Bang will be starting a lower-priced line called Bee 23 that will be sold at Urban Outfitters this fall.
Whereas I am excited to see what they come up with, I fear they may be a little too late, as there are already so many cheap knock-offs of their style....watch this space!

One to Watch: Harlan Bel

Harlan Bel, the label conceived by Brandy Lunsford, made its fashion week debut for fall 2007. Brandy is of Parsons pedigree, also having worked for greats such as Victoria Bartlett (a personal favorite), Jill Stuart, and Ralph Lauren before breaking out on her own.
I am personally drawn to her line for its unique play on shapes. I adore the grey tones and neutrals paired with a pop of rich magenta. She plays with unique architectures with her pleating and layering, but always manages to emphasize the womans body. Her line taps into the trend of geometric color-blocking with exquisite seaming that somehow manages to allude to a modern sexiness.

Alexander Wang for Uniqlo

I am a huge fan of Alexander Wang...but I can go ahead and get at the end of the line, because this 24 year old designer is the darling of the fashion scene. For me, he really hits on all the elements that I love: The 80's, dark rocker style, contradictory layering, and grey tones.
He debuted at fashionweek for fall 2007, but really made a mark for spring 2008 when he teamed up with his muse, model Erin Wasson, as his stylist. Now, I have actually worked many times with Erin, and I really see them as a great fit. She always used to walk into fittings for Maybelline looking cool and casual...your typical 'Model Off Duty', usually in worn in jeans, layered T-shirts, chain necklaces, and no make-up. The client always wanted to preserve her coolness, but as with any advertising job, I think it did eventually get lost in the shuffle. None-the-less, Wang recognized what she had and used it well. She brought in the ripped up shorts, running black tights, her own chain jewelry, beanie hats, and bovver boots to create a totally badass femme that served to bring out Wangs edgy tailoring and unique style.
OK, I have gushed enough.
So now his vision will be available to the masses as his guest line for Uniqlo hits stores this friday. If you didn't know already, Uniqlo is the japanese equivalent of the Gap. A great place for basics (jeans, sweaters, shirts etc)...except the japanese are always much more stylish in a very modern avant-garde kind of way. So, go shop the line...and if you really want to complete the look, wear a big black beanie hat, ripped tights and big black boots with your dress...and don't forget to layer on a worn in black leather jacket.

Guerrilla Art #1

1st Avenue and 2nd St.
I am obsessed with good graffiti...So keep an eye out for this new regular feature. Often times, the artists does not 'sign' their work, so if you know who did it (I'm talking art aliases, not real names)...leave me a comment!
This one looks suspiciously like a Banksy...but I'm sure there are imitators out there. What do you think?

Trend watch....Tux

ChloeMoschinoAlexander Wang
Rag and Bone

Bond, James Bond...
yes, it's time to hit the casino, because tux inspired clothes have officially saturated the market. The trend has been on the runways for several seasons now, but at this point it almost seems an obligatory element in womenswear.
The fantastic thing is that it's not being taken too literally. It can be just the bib front of a tux shirt added to a dress, or satin trim on the side of your pants, or perhaps just a great waistcoat. Have fun with it!  Don't over do it....no need to dress like a man at a wedding, but adding one piece to an outfit that is already making a statement (punky or girly, it can work) will give you an edge. Think Jennifer beals in Flash Dance...how hot was that?

Economic stimulous check...

Hey guys...what are you going to spend your check on?
The big idea is that if good old Bush gives us a small sum of money, we will spend it locally on consumer goods, and businesses will boom...those businesses will the hire people, who will then earn more money, and spend more. hmmmmmm, I'm really not convinced a single check of $300-$1200 will do that (especially when that doesn't even cover my current bills), but for the sake of argument, let's play along....

I'm into the new version of the Ray Ban Wayfarers...they go for around $150
Or, guest designer Alexander Wang hits Uniqlo this friday...
or, I could hit up ebay for a great vintage belt (always good for the wardrobe)...
......But most likely, I'm gonna have to spend it on this...
...don't get me started...

Stylist Tip #1: Tailoring

Every Body is different...

Before I became a stylist I just bought what looked nice off the rack. The heartbreak occurred when something looked great on the hanger, but somehow didn't look good on me. Whereas, from time to time, this is simply the hard truth that we have to swallow...at other times we do not.   I discovered this as we always have a tailor on set to make sure those clothes you see in the catalogs are fitted perfectly to the models body....and why should models have all the fun?
I took the opportunity the other day to ask the on-set tailor some questions, and here is her advice:
Pants:
Make sure the hem line is correct. It's such an easy fix, there's just no excuse! Not too short, and definitely not so long that they drag on the ground...a trouser should have one nice 'break' (which is a half fold/bend at the front of the ankle). Tailors will not have a problem taking hems up, and depending on the pant, can sometimes also give them extra length by letting them down, if need be.
Fit around the butt is paramount! Avoid muffin top by going for a slightly higher rise, and making sure the waist band fits properly. If you have a slight apple bottom (like me), then you may be plagued with 'bucket butt' waist lines, where the back of the waist band does not hug the lower back. In such a case, buy pants that fit the widest part of you with ease, then have the back of the waistband taken in. Yes, that may mean buying a size or two up.
Skirts/dresses:
The hemline can often be altered...and if you are 'petite', sometimes you may find a dress too dowdy as it hits below the knee, when in fact it was intended to hit just above the knee. Again, a very easy fix. Take a look in the mirror and determine what proportions are right for your body type.
Jackets:
The shoulder seam should hit nicely on the edge of your own shoulder. not too tight...and certainly not hanging off the end. Jackets can be altered slightly to hit the right spot, but only if they are one size too big.
Also make sure your cuffs are the right length. They should hit about 1" below your wrist. It's also nice to see a half inch of shirt cuff peaking out.
Other:
In the summer, spaghetti strap tops and dresses often have straps that are too long. Take those suckers up lest you flash someone in some tragic wardrobe misfunction....but not too high either, miss prim. It's all about the happy medium.
She also suggests that if you get most your wardrobe from chain stores, that you can up them a notch by replacing bad plastic buttons with fancy ones. Try M&J trim, or your local fabric store.

Martin + Osa

As promised in my intro manifesto...
As a stylist, I am exposed to new things constantly. Admitedly, I do live in a bubble known as Manhattan...this time I uncovered something that those living outside the big apple are probably already aware of:
Casual to upscale ready to wear with an emphasis on basic wardrobe elements that have fine details. This is where you'll go for good blouses, jackets, and cardigans...for both men and women.
The design seems to be getting better and better every season (perhaps it's because they've recently poached a designer from Burberry), and as we were shooting the fall collection, I found that they had a lot of fun layering elements that could add to any wardrobe. I saw fantastic
shrunken jackets, a great variety of unique knit wear, and nice inside-out silk blouses. They put a lot of emphasis in creating your own look by mixing and matching different textures and
shapes...and by god, belt it! You won't find single 'show' pieces here, but great quality staples. I would recommend having a look at the store, or shopping online when the fall stuff drops. In the mean time, it's fun to play with their 'layer it' studio on their website.
If you're getting bored with Banana Republic and J. Crew, this is one to watch.

Peter Soronen

...
A couple seasons ago on a rainy fashion-week day, I dragged my ass out of bed for the first of many shows to attend that day. It was a designer I had never heard of, and after a rather boring week so far, I was lacking in energy. But from the moment I hit the venue, I had a renewed hope for high-end gowns. Peter Soronen inspired me as he fused vintage glamour with a subtly new-wave punky edge. I have since had the pleasure of styling a designer profile on Peter for zoozoom (which was shot by the uber-talented Claudia Goetselmann), as well as meeting him and writing his bio. In fact, my profile picture features me wearing a custom made corset by Peter...which is probably my most prized possession to date.  So if you have the means...and you are looking for a gown for an event...and you have a sparky personality...get thee to Barneys and check out Peter Soronen. You will be in good company, as Sarah Jessica Parker, Hilary Swank, Reese Witherspoon, and Christina Aguilera have all cottoned on to his talents.

Cariad Harmon...go see her play!

In other music news...
As you may have guessed, nothing tickles me more than to get to style a musician. Fashion shoots are definitely fun, because the model has to wear what you tell them to wear...but a girl loves a challenge. How much more fun is it to help a person express themselves? In those cases, I have to get them into clothes they love, make sure they are conveying the right thing, and mostly, make sure they are hot.
In the case of Cariad Harmon, it was all actually very simple: sifting through her own vintage finds to pick out the most flattering and most unique pieces...adding a belt to show off that glorious hour-glass figure, and she's ready for set. Set was the beaches of long-island and a fantastic Mustang we came across. Our photographer of choice was Rich Miceli who really has an eye for portraiture...always adding in elements of the surroundings, creating a context for his subjects.
So you should hear her play.

Product.01, Form, and Frey/Martin

...
It's a new blog, so there'll be some catching up to do over the next few weeks. Tonight I'd like to share with you the fantastic shoot I worked on a couple weeks ago for the singer of electro duo Product.01, Rochelle Vincente. The UK based band has been on the dance scene now for years, and is really coming to the forefront with their recent collaborations with Alter Ego and Tiga.
In the shots above, Rochelle wore designs by Form, whom I really love. Their work is often very architectural with rich fabrics and neutral tones. Pieces are draped creating a geometric layer over the female form.  I paired the black hooded top with sky high platforms by L.A.M.B....if you wanna go leggy, go L.A.M.B.  Those shoes are badass. The line of the foot is nearly vertical, but the comfort level is there as the ball of the foot is well padded.
Speaking of badass, the photos are shot by the dynamic duo Peter Frey and Andrea Martin. Young, hot, and edgy, they really know how to bring out the best in their subjects. Of course, Natalie Distefano brought out Roxx's beauty with the make-up as well.
And finally, I gotta give a big shout out to Studio Eve...a sort of hub for artists in the heart of the meat packing industry. I swear, every time I am there I meet someone fabulous who is creating seemingly impossible things. You can read all about it's goings on in Shush! magazine.

Rogan for Target

Today saw the launch of yet another Go International line for Target. I must say, I love the ethos of 'design for all'....and many stores are jumping on the bandwagon.
As a stylist, I spend many days at the posh marble floored stores of 5th avenue, where the uber-rich like to invest in beautiful wardrobe confectionary. One can't help but notice the extravagant artistry of a well designed dress, but the responsible gal in me knows that (for now anyway) paying the rent is more important.
So imagine my delight when the very designers whose runway shows I have drooled over every february and september have done guest appearances at stores that I can actually afford? And the favor goes both ways, as many people get opened up to the work of designers they may not have even heard of (as they have no presence in the shopping malls of this country).
Today it is ROGAN, and he is taking the ethos one step further by making his creations all eco-friendly.
Rogan is the epitomy of downtown NY urban casual chic, and he is one of the most recent winners of the CFDA Vogue fashion fund. I was lucky enough to attend his store opening at 330 Bowery last week where everyone in attendance could have been a member of the band The Kills...including myself.
Check out the line at target.com. Barney's NY liked it so much, they previewed the collection last month.

Welcome!

This is the launch posting of my blog 'Guerrilla Stylist'...fashion from the frontlines.

I am a fashion stylist based in New York, and have been at it since January 2002.  Before that I was a political theatre director in the UK for 5 years...with very much punk rock leanings.
My ethos is that of perpetuating genuine self expression, truth, and freedom. How I went from political theatre to fashion? It's not too short of a leap. Lifestyle-wise, I really enjoy being freelance. Working on creative projects with different people everyday is my definition of joie de vivre. Also, as an ex-punker, we'd be the first to tell you that there is much to be expressed through what a person is wearing. So my approach to fashion is from the standpoint of personality. We all use fashion to communicate: our job position, our chosen leisure activity, our socio/religious/political stance, our self-esteem. Fashion, when used properly, can also help accentuate our different body-types. We are all unique and should dress accordingly. As a result, there will be no fashion-dictatorship on this blog. I will not tell you what to wear, as such things should differ greatly from person to person.
What I will do is report on what I see. I spend most of my work week shopping, at photoshoots, travelling, or in fashion showrooms. If I see something cool I will let you know. I am here to inspire. It is for you to decide what you do with the information.
