After several days shooting still-life for middle of the road jewelry, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself lunching with the fabulous Eugenie Huang, designer of Deka Ray. I had met her once a few years ago on a shoot and later used her highly covetable stacking arrow rings for a ZOOZOOM editorial. It was good to see her again, and even better to hear how inundated she is with orders. The chick is overwhelmed...and no shocker there, her work is amazing and word is spreading like wild fire. Her pieces have been featured in many magazines, including Nylon, TeenVogue, and Elle. A little birdie tells me that she will be showing at GenArt for the upcoming New York Fashion Week. This is super exciting as many designers are discovered at that show (I for one always keep an eye on GenArt).Personally, I think her modern aesthetic will be perfect for the GenArt cutting edge vibe. I love her clean lines and her clever way of deconstructing icons and recreating them in a rather graphic and non-linear way. Her background in architecture really lends itself to her designs, as she clearly has spent years visualizing three dimensional shapes and working out how they best fit together.
She had originally won me over with her 'Multiply' series, that features arrows as the principal icon (I still drool uncontrollably over those pieces). But in looking at her 'Deathstar Debris' collection, I really could see the extent of her vision. The name itself is good enough to intrigue anyone (come-on, it's dark, it's the 'force'...), and the design takes geometry to a whole other level. It's almost like the faceting of precious stones meeting some dark iron underworld.
